Sangyup (Sam) Choi is a Professor at the School of Economics at Yonsei University. Before tenure, he was the Lee Youn Jae Rising Fellowship Professor.  He currently serves on the Advisory Panel of the Bank of Korea Economic Research Institute and is the chief editor of the Korean Journal of Economics. He is also a Research Associate at the Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis (CAMA) at the Australian National University. Prior to joining Yonsei University, he worked as an economist in the Economist Program at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). His work focuses on financial market imperfections, fluctuations in uncertainty, the transmission mechanisms of monetary and fiscal policy and their international spillovers, as well as the interaction between housing markets and the macroeconomy.

He has published over twenty articles in leading international academic journals, including the Journal of Monetary Economics, Review of Economic Dynamics, Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Journal of Applied Econometrics, International Journal of Central Banking, Macroeconomic Dynamics, Journal of International Money and Finance, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and Oxford Economic Papers. His research has been cited in Ben Bernanke’s Nobel Lecture (Banking, Credit, and Economic Fluctuations), the Economic Report of the President (Joe Biden), and speeches by the IMF Managing Director (Christine Lagarde) at the Atlantic Council.

He has received numerous honors, including the 56th Maekyung Economist Award (2026) 15th Tae Sung Kim Award for the best Korean economist under 40 (2025), 13th Dasan Young Economist Award for the best Korean economist under 45 (2024), Lee Youn Jae Rising Fellowship (2023), 7th Korea Economic Research Award, and Choheon Academic Award (2022). He has also received University Research Excellence Awards in 2020, 2022, and 2025. He was named one of the young and influential economists in Korea by Chosun Biz. He earned his a Ph.D. in Economics from UCLA in 2015, his B.A. in Economics from Yonsei University in 2009, and studied at UC Berkeley from 2007 to 2008.
